Cycling Tour along the Danube

Discover a wonderful landscape, picturesque villages and be impressed by the fabulous sites from Roma times and beyond. The Schlogner loop, Strudengau - Nibelungengau or Wachau - each region has its own attraction.

Cycle along the Danube through a beautiful landscape with forests and meadows. Art and cultural properties tell the history from times gone by and some lovely inns invite you to enjoy some culinary delights.

Tour profile is level 1 with the path paved, flat and generally along the river bank so this tour is very suitable for beginners and children

Classic Danube by Bike - Passau  to Vienna - 8 day Tour

The most famous cycle path in Europe: Passau to Vienna along the beautiful Blue Danube.                                        Discover wonderful landscapes with forests and meadows, pituresque villages and and sights  from the Roman and Nibelungen times. Each region including the Schlögener loop, Strudengau, Nibelungengau and Wachau have their own unique attraction. 

Highlights -  Passau; Linz- Capital of Upper Austria; Grein - City and Theatre; Wachau; Abbey of Melk; Krems and Vienna

Tour Profile -  Level 1. The path is completely paved, flat, almost always directly along the river bank.  Very suitable for beginners and families.

Itinerary: 

Day 1: Passau   

Arrive at your hotel  in Passau. Take some time to walk through the picturesque old part of town or take a boat cruise around the city of 3 rivers. (not included in tour)

Day 2: Passau - Schlögener Loop (approx 44km/28 miles)

At   8.30am you will have a personal welcome meeting and collect your bikes. Your trip starts through the Upper Danube Valley to Schlögen.  Passing through Engelhartszell you can visit the only 'Trappist'Monastery   in Austria and taste the famous liqueurs. Then cycle on to the unique and impressive 'Schlögener  Schlinge'  - the Danube Loop  where the river makes an about turn of 180 degrees.

Day 3: Schlögener Loop - Linz (approx 53km/33 miles)

Take a small ferry between the banks on your journey to Linz, the Capital of Upper Austria. On your way you will cycle through Eferdinger basin. On arriving in Linz enjoy the summer evening with a shopping tour of the charming old part of the town.                          

Day 4: Linz - Grein  (approx 60km/ 38 miles)

Tip - Take a trip to Enns, the oldest city in Austria.  Cycle through the Celtic village of Mitterkirchen, pass the church in Baumgartenberg and the romantic castle in Clam.  At the end of the day, you reach the beautiful baroque town of Grein, here you can visit the oldest theatre in Austria.

Day 5: Grein - Melk (approx 51km/32 miles)

Enjoy the Danube landscape as you pass through Struden and Nibelungenau, with high wooded rock formations on both sides of the river. High above the river stands the pilgrimage church of Maria Taferi about 20km from Melk.

As you arrive into Melk you will see the Benedictine Monastery.

Day 6: Melk - Krems/Traismauer (approx 39km/25 miles)

A highlight of the tour is the beautiful scenery  of the Wachau, a valley 40km long, of high visibility formed by the Danube river, where there are ancient monastries, castles, vineyards and apricot trees.

Cycling towards Krems you will pass the vinyards of Spitz, Weissenkirchen and Dϋrnstein, passing  many taverns to enjoy the Austria hospitality.  

Day 7: Krems/Traismauer - Vienna (approx 39km/25 miles) + Train

You will leave by train and restart the last leg of your cycle ride in Tulln. Don't forget to visit the monastery in Klosterneuburg before reaching Vienna!

Day 8: Vienna

Make sure you visit the famous 'Naschmarkt'- Vienna's most popular market - a Viennese institution dating back to the 16th century. Train ride back to Passau.
