Pitztal, Austria
The Pitztal valley is, remarkably, not well known on the British market. Located just 90km from Innsbruck airport it is a beautiful valley in the Austrian Tyrol.

A range of ski areas reside down this valley alongside the 7 villages with Mandarfen being a key base for the Pitztaler Gletscher and the Rifflesee ski area and Jerzens being the village with the Hochzeiger ski area. Additionally, 2 lovely hotels are located in Imst which provide a perfect base for those seeking a tranquil hotel and who wish to partake in the Ski Safari.
Although Pitztal is ideal for a winter ski holiday , do consider a spring or autumn break in the mountains - the hotels in this area are perfect for a holiday break with a difference. What makes Pitztal so worthy of mention is that this glacial resort can provide skiing from mid September through to mid May and children under 10 can ski for free (yes – free!). This means you can even consider a ski break during the October half term or get a long weekend in at the end of April when all your friends were thinking the season was over.
So what’s the catch – in short, perception. If ski kilometarage is your sole criteria – this resort may not work for you. But look at the diagram – make Pitztal your base and you have 10 ski areas from your doorstep to a maximum of 1 hour away – and we can even drive you for 3 away days of your choice. But of course, if you ski for pleasure, to enjoy the mountains and to test your technique on a range of terrain – why will you need more than 88 km of slopes?
