Calling all dog lovers

As a dog lover (and recently a dog owner once more) I was thrilled to experience husky dog sledding earlier this year.

This activity can be enjoyed by anyone and was a real highlight of our holiday. First we were introduced to the dogs and our musher told us about the different breeds which are used. Apparently it's only real huskies who have the blue eyes - other dogs which are used include greenland dogs, malamutes and samoyeds.

He then hooked up the sledges to be used, tucked us in and we were off. The dogs were all keen to run and as soon as they saw that the sledges were being prepared they started to jump around excitedly and howl.  We were doing the family experience and were guided round the track two at a time. We were kept warm with blankets (and were wearing our ski clothes) It is also possible to book for longer and learn how to guide the dogs/sledge and issue commands.

These photos are from the Nevache valley which is where we went to do it - It's easily accessible from both Serre Chevalierand Montgenevre, but the activity is also available in Alpe D'huez, Chamonix and Formigal among other resorts. You do need to reserve in advance as it is popular and gets booked up quite quicky.

Since this trip we now have our own dog and if we get any snow this winter Sponge might have a go at pulling a sledge for the children - he's certainly big enough as you can see!

Sponge at 8 months (no Husky dog in him - he came to us from Battersea after being abandoned in January along with his 9 litter mates. We think he is some sort of mastiff crossed with other giant breeds - maybe Great Dane or ridgeback.....)
