Known amongst the locals as the Ile du Soleil, it's obvious what attracts skiers and boarders to the resorts of the Southern Alps. An excellent snow record and many sunny days make for a very pleasant mountain experience. ( the French weather bureau has recorded an average of 300 days of sunshine per year in Alpe D'Huez).
The slopes include 2 snow parks (one for beginners and one for experts), 2 beginner areas, 2 ski slopes approved by the International Ski federation for international ski competitions, an ice cave, 50km of cross country trails and 30km of hiking trails. There is night skiing twice a week on the Signal slope and there is the opportunity to ski your First 8000m -4 runs each with a vertical drop of 2000m (See Doing More).
There are plenty of activities for non skiers too - the facilities at the Palais des Sports include an indoor pool, gym, climbing wall, adventure trail and exercise classes. There's also an outdoor pool and an ice rink in the resort. The winter walking pass gives access to over 30km of footpaths using the cable cars to explore the area. Le Spa has a sauna, hot tub, hammam, beauty treatments and massages for anyone wanting to relax and there are plenty of shops for anyone wanting to indulge in some retail therapy. There is free wifi in lots of the resort bars (with purchase).
