Ski Holidays in Montgenevre

Montgenevre is a beautiful village resort which, whilst it has seen quite a lot of development over the last few years, is still a great resort for a ski holiday -particularly a family ski holiday.

The new developments in the ski resort include new apartment buildings in the obelisk hamlet, a new tourist office (where there is free wifi), a new “espace partenaires“ housing the ski schools, lift pass sales and a crèche

The ski resort has still retained its French village character and with the Monty luge added in winter 10/11, the resort is a firm favourite for a family ski holiday.

Background on Montgenevre ski resort

The ski resort of Montgenevre was the site for the first ever international ski competition back in 1907 organised by the Club Alpin Francais and the army and it was watched by over 3000 spectators. Techniques were only just developing and at the time most skiers stopped by just falling over - and.... we're told that this is still called a "Brianconnias stop"!

Montgenevre has come along way since then - especially in the last 9 years -  a tunnel under the resort means the busy through road has now reverted back to a quiet main street as any through traffic by passes the resort completely. And if you want to walk into Italy for an authentic Italian pizza, Claviere is a 25 minute stroll down a very gentle green piste - but a torch is advisable at night. Italy is only 2km away! In fact if you ski the Monts de la Lune area on your ski holiday, you will be skiing in both Italy and France and experiencing both cultures.

The skiing in Montgenevre

The ski area in Montgenevre is great on its own and you can get day passes just for this area, if required. If you like to add up the KM whilst you are skiing you may prefer to buy a Mont de La Lune pass which includes the neighbouring Italian resorts of Claviere and Cesana. This covers 100km of slopes and is the pass that most people buy. The Monts de la Lune pass also includes a day skiing the Milky Way in Sauze D'Oulx, Sansicario and Sestriere, where the 2006 Winter Olympics were held so you can test your skill on the Olympic runs. Any Monts de la Lune pass of 6 days or more also gives you a free days skiing in any of the other Grand Galaxie resorts (Serre Chevalier, Puy St Vincent, Alpe D'Huez, Les Deux Alpes or Italian Milky way). A 6 day lift pass also entitles you to a reduced price ride on the Monty Express (to be taken Mon - Fri). This is Montgenevre's new luge track which descends from the top of the Chalvet cable car and is the longest luge in France. We're told you can reach speeds of 40kmph!! The liftpasses in Montgenevre use the keycard system.

The resort hasn't stopped investing either - the next project is to join the club of resorts with skiing above 3000m - this will be with the addition of a lift on Mt Chaberton and the development will even have a blue run from this height - you'll have to come back in 2012/13 for this though as it won't be finished until then.
