Stretching from Reykjavik and the Reykjanes peninsula round the coast to Vik, this area of Iceland is where you will find of the trio of sights known as he "Golden Circle" .
Things to see and do in South Iceland
These are the Gullfoss waterfalls (Golden Falls), Geysir and Þingvellir National Park. Gullfoss is a waterfall in the canyon of the Hvita river and can be visited on foot. Geysir is where you can see the Strokkur Geysir (or geyser in english) - this is probably Icelands most famous geysir and it erupts every 4 to 8 minutes shooting a tower of thermal water over 20m into the air.
Þingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the site of the world's first parliament AlÞingi which met from 930AD until 1798. It is also where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet and it's possible to dive or snorkel here to see the Silfra Rift.
Little known until a few years ago the now world famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano is also situated in South Iceland as well as other active volcanoes such as Mt Hekla and Mt Katla.
Try horse riding, ice climbing, white water rafting, a superjeep tour, hiking or snowmobiling in this spectacular area of Iceland.
