Ski Holidays in Cortina
Cortina is one of the most elegant winter resorts in the world and the resort itself is based around the road called the Corso Italia which is known for its' designer boutiques.
The winter Olympics were held here in 1956 - it was minus 22 and before gortex and all the materials we know and use today had been invented!
Ski area of Cortina
The ski area is made up of different areas - beginners learn on the lower slopes of the Tofana area and then move onto one of the larger areas. The main cable car from the centre of town takes you up to the Faloria ski area which overlooks the resorts. The slopes here are a mixture of mainly blues and reds with a few blacks thrown in for good measure - if you're looking for a more challenging ski then you should head over to Cristallo
On the south facing side is the Tofane ski area reached by the Freccia nel Cielo cable car near the Olympic stadium in the resort centre and further along is the Cinque Torre area which you can access using the free ski bus. This is the starting point for the longest slope in the Dolomites - the Armetarola. Altogether Cortina has 140km of slopes and is also part of the Sella Ronda which has a total of 1200km of skiing - to access this, all you need is the super dolomite lift pass
Doing More in Cortina
Every year on the frozen over lake at Misurina there is the polo as part of the Audi polo Gold Cup Circuit. In the Punta Nera Challenge - skiers go up by helicopter to the Faloria refuge and then descend the mountain performing jumps of more than 50m - a great spectator sport! On the Giau pass you will see people snowkiting - a sport which started in France but has quickly spread to other areas (see doingmore for details of the dates for this event).
There's ice driving in Fiames, snowshoeing, tobogganing - see doing more
Throughout December there are about 20 stalls along the Corso Italia which make up the Christmas market - stalls include the chocolate fair with workshops, chocolate tasting and a chocolomarket.....there are others but these certainly enhance a delicious holiday experience at Christmas time.
