City Breaks in Ljubljana
A walk around the city centre should take in the main sites such as the Triple bridge by Preseren Trg (Trg means place or Square) This is very much a focal point and there are often events in the summer evenings here.
There's also a model of the city here so you can get your bearings. You will soon see that the main part of the city is between the castle, the river and the city. There is a lot of development going on at the moment especially between shoemakers bridge (so called because in medieval times 16 cobblers plied their trade on the bridge) and dragons bridge whicfh would have been behind the old city walls. There are also still archaelogical digs going on as a medieval grave yard has bee discovered along with eveidence of settlers in 2000BC living where the castle now stands. In fact the worlds' oldest wheel was discovered here.
Much of the architecture you will see was all done by the same person - Joze Plecnik . he was an architect, city planner and designer and was not only born in Ljubljana, but also re-designed much of it. Examples of his work are the National Library, Triple Bridge, Tivoli Park, central market, various churchs and much more (and that's just in this city - there are many more examples of his work throughout Slovenia).
