Piran, Slovenia
Piran is a beautiful old town on a narrow peninsula on the coast of Slovenia. The name comes from the word Piros - meaning fire - and dates back to when the lighthouse was lit by a fire. The buildings are Venetian gothic which makes it very picturesque.

Piran
The Tartinijev Trg is the old square in the centre which is surrounded by bars and restaurants, as well as the town hall and courthouse and the tourist office. Up until 1864 it was the harbour however it was paved over with marble. In the centre of it there is a statue of Giuseppe Tartini (hence the name of the square).
From the square you can see the old city walls which were built to protect the town from the Turks. You can climb up to these for some great views of Piran and the Adriatic sea. From the square (and the walls) you can also see the church of St George - a renaissance and baroque church.
There is also an aquarium, a Maritime museum and a museum of Underwater activities.
